Sound of Mull and Shepherd's Hat

This photograph was taken by Scottish photographer George Washington Wilson (1823-93) and was used to illustrate talks he gave on Highland history. The following description is taken from Washington Wilson's own lecture notes.

From the heights above the beautiful bay of Oban, on one of these lovely afternoons so peculiar to the West Coast, the prospect is truly magnificent. Before you the Sound of Mull sparkles in sunlight, broken up here and there by the rocks on the west side of Kerrera, among which the Shepherd's Hat is a very prominent object. In the distance where the sky and the water appear to meet, the mountains of Mull stand out boldly, while the clouds overhead show a variety of colour such as no hand can adequately portray. Beyond this beautiful prospect lies the comparatively unknown islands of the Outer Hebrides.
