Crofter and daughter planting potatoes

This photograph was taken by Scottish photographer George Washington Wilson (1823-93) and was used to illustrate talks he gave on Highland history. The following description is taken from Washington Wilson's own lecture notes.

In some instances, when the soil is soft, the help of a spade is often necessary in order to turn the full length of the blade, as in the case of the crofter and his daughter planting potatoes.
