Sligachan Hotel and Marsgow

This photograph was taken by Scottish photographer George Washington Wilson (1823-93) and was used to illustrate talks he gave on Highland history. The following description is taken from Washington Wilson's own lecture notes.

From Portree, Glen Sligachan, Scuir-na-gilleann, and Loch Coruisk may be visited, and Sligachan Hotel is usually made the starting point for these places. The Hotel stands alone at the entrance of this wild glen, and is distant from Portree about 9½ miles. Shortly after leaving Portree, on looking back, the Storr Rock is seen to recede during the first half of the journey, while directly in front the Coolin range becomes more and more imposing as you near the Hotel, which stands under the shadow of Scuir-na-gilleann, the grandest of the black Coolin range.
