This photograph was taken by Scottish photographer George Washington Wilson (1823-93) and was used to illustrate talks he gave on Highland history. The following description is taken from Washington Wilson's own lecture notes.

The distance between Benbecula and South Uist is only about half a mile, which, like the North Ford, is a stretch of wet sand at low water. The eastern coast is mountainous and cleft with Lochs Boisdale, Eynort, and Skiport. The Island is considerably larger than North Uist, and consequently the industries in which the people engage are more varied.
