A Poorhouse

This photograph was taken by Scottish photographer George Washington Wilson (1823-93) and was used to illustrate talks he gave on Highland history. The following description is taken from Washington Wilson's own lecture notes.

For the helpless aged there are provided wretched huts, mere apologies for a poorhouse. These are partly burrowed into the earth, and thus utilized. There the poor creatures must live or die on the shameful pittance of 2s.6d. per month, and how they manage to exist on this is more than the writer of this paragraph can divine
