The Badcaul Islands, Scourie

This postcard shows a the Badcaul (Badcall) Islands in Badcall Bay, just south of Scourie in west Sutherlandshire. In the early nineteenth century a salmon curing station was built at Badcall, just on the shores of the bay. The salmon processed there would have been preserved in barrels, either with salt, or boiled and stored in vinegar. They would then have been exported to England or abroad. Until refrigeration was invented, salmon could also have been preserved in specially constructed ice houses
