Invermoriston House, Loch Ness

This postcard shows Invermoriston House on the western shores of Loch Ness, the seat of Ian Robert James Murray Grant (b. 1860). Originally, the Invermoriston Estate had been granted to the Grant family back in the 15th century. During the Jacobite Rising of 1715 the ancient castle at Glenmoriston or Invermoriston was burnt down by government troops and the lands forfeited to the Crown. The land was bought back and a new structure built, but this was also burnt down in the 1745 Jacobite Rising. In the 19th century, Alexander Ross's architect firm undertook restoration work on Invermoriston House for the Grant family
