Township of Durine, Durness

This postcard shows a view of the crofting township of Durine, Durness, on the northwest coast of Sutherland. As well as crofting, the local economy relies on fish farming, sheep and tourism; the area is good for sea trout fishing, walking and sailing.

In the 19th century when clearances were proposed the people of the Durness area resisted. Military intervention ensured that clearances did go ahead but to a lesser extent than originally planned. Naval troops were stationed near Durness during World War II
