Motor cars on train

This photograph shows a train passing under the bridge on the way out of Kyle of Lochalsh, heading east to Inverness. Tourists and travellers who wanted to have the use of their motors when on the west coast would often choose to get to the outlying areas by train rather than making the long and tiresome journey on poor, narrow roads. With the Stromeferry-Kyle rail line extension opened in 1897, the village of Kyle grew to become the biggest port in the area, the most used route to Skye, and a popular tourist destination
