Dunvegan Castle from the foreshore

Parts of Dunvegan Castle are thought to date from the 9th century but additions and renovations have taken place in every century since the Macleods took over the castle in the 1200s. The castle stands 22 miles west of Portree, on the island of Skye, on the shores of Loch Dunvegan. Dunvegan has been occupied continuously occupied by the Macleods, apart from a short period after the potato famine, for nearly eight centuries. The current chief of the clan courted controversy recently when he put the Cuillin hills up for sale to pay for castle repairs. No buyer was found.
