Corrugated iron church at Elphin, manufacturer's plate

This manufacturer's plate for 'Speirs & Coy, Glasgow' is on the corrugated iron church at Elphin, Assynt.

From 1842 to 1929 the Church in Scotland experienced a series of secessions and schisms. Consequently, many new church buildings were needed and in the remoter areas of the Highlands and Islands it was easier and quicker to erect prefabricated corrugated iron churches. Manufacturers included Braby & Company, and R. R. Speirs, both of Glasgow. Between 1908 and 1914 Speirs and Co. alone supplied 75 throughout the area, of which at least 8 remain today
