Photograph of a memorial stone in Westkapelle, Netherlands

This postcard was provided by Agnes Milne who was interviewed by pupils of Cawdor Primary School as part of a War Detectives project in 2005.

The inscription on the memorial stone is written in Dutch and English:

4 Commando Brigade British Liberation Army landde hier op 1 Nov. 1944 om het eiland te bevrijden

4 Commando Brigade British Liberation Army landed here on 1 Nov. 1944 to liberate the island

Westkapelle is a village on the island of Walcheren in the Zeeland province of the Netherlands. It is surrounded by the sea on three sides. On 3 October 1944, British bombers destroyed the dyke to the south of the village in order to flood Walcheren so that it could be liberated. The Allied troops then performed an amphibious landing on 1 November 1944 on the northern and southern edges of the gap in the dyke
