Photograph of sailors fishing for depth charges

This is a photograph of sailors on HMS Franklin fishing for depth charges off Cherbourg during World War 2. The depth charge was a waterproof weapon used by ships or aircraft to attack submerged submarines. HMS Franklin was a minesweeper of the Halcyon class which surveyed the harbours of north-west Europe after the Normandy landings.

This photograph was supplied by William Shand who served on HMS Franklin in 1944-45 and was interviewed by pupils of Rosebank Primary School, Nairn, as part of a War Detectives project in 2005
