This is a photograph of William Shand in Hamburg four days after the end of World War 2. William was serving at the time on HMS Franklin as a Royal Navy wireless operator. HMS Franklin was a minesweeper of the Halcyon class which surveyed the harbours of north-west Europe after the Normandy landings. The crews from HMS Franklin and other minesweepers represented the Royal Navy at the surrender of the German navy.

William Shand was interviewed by pupils of Rosebank Primary School, Nairn, as part of a War Detectives project in 2005
