The school was established in 1961 as Millburn Junior Secondary School, the school name deriving from the nearby 'Mill Burn.' It was not until 1967 that the school became known as Millburn Academy, having gone through several name changes in the interim. In 1979 Millburn Academy commenced development into a six year school and it has remained as such to the present day.

A new school was opened on November 3rd 2008 and was built on the old school's playing fields.
