David and Violet Morrison, Durness Primary School

This photograph is of David and Violet Morrison, taken at Durness Primary School in 1953 or 1954.

Durness is a crofting township in northwest Sutherland. As well as crofting, the local economy relies on fish farming, sheep and tourism; the area is good for sea trout fishing, walking and sailing.

In the 19th century when clearances were proposed the people of the Durness area resisted. Military intervention ensured that clearances did go ahead but to a lesser extent than originally planned
