A trip to Handa

Calum Morrison, Jessie Morrison, Iain Morrison and Jennifer Morrison photographed on Handa in the late 1970s.

Handa is a small, uninhabited island off the coast of Sutherland north of Scourie. It is separated from the mainland by the Sound of Handa. The island is part of the Scourie Estate and managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. Handa was inhabited until 1847 when the population was evacuated to Nova Scotia to avoid starvation brought on by mass crop failures. Today the island is internationally famous for its colonies of seabirds which include Great Skuas, Arctic Skuas, Guillemots, Razerbacks, Kittiwakes and Puffins.
