Angus Mackay & Jackie Macpherson, Laid

This photograph shows Angus Mackay (left) and Jackie Macpherson. It was taken outside Angus's cottage at Laid, Sutherland.

Angus, better known as Pongo, was probably the last exponent of a little-known local dance known as the 'puirt-nam-bagh'. He lived with his sister Bess.

Jackie, a postman, lived in Sangomore but cycled to Laid most days on his Post Office bike. If the weather was rough he drove his old Baby Austin and gave lifts to all those he met on the road.
