The new quay, Campbeltown

The new quay at Campbeltown, c.1890, showing two trawl skiffs moored near a fishing smack. The trawl, or ring-net, was invented in 1837. It used two boats, known as skiffs, to encircle the shoal of fish with the net and was a more efficient method of fishing than the drift net used previously.
