Freshly caught herring, with gutters and barrels

By the 1880s, there were over six hundred fishing boats registered in Campbeltown. These boats were driven either by oar or sail and were known as 'Loch Fyne Skiffs'. During the early nineteenth century, hundreds of thousands of barrels of fish were being exported from Scotland every year. Herring, pictured in the photograph, were transferred into barrels of salt and pickled. The barrels were exported to countries such as Russia and Holland
