The lifeboat 'The John R. Ker', housed at Dunaverty Lifeboat House, near Southend. The opening ceremony of the new lifeboat house and lifeboat took place in 1905.

The first lifeboat station to be opened in the Kintyre area was the station at New Quay, Campbelltown, in 1861. Charles MacGrory, the photographer, was the secretary for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) for several years and took many pictures of fund-raising events in and around Campbeltown
