The first lifeboat station to be opened in the Kintyre area was at New Quay, Campbelltown, in 1861. Charles MacGrory, the photographer, was the secretary for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) for several years and took many pictures of fund-raising events in and around Campbeltown
