Gleann Laoigh is situated in the Kintyre Peninsula. It is the birthplace of Colonel Alan Cameron, the founder of the 79th Cameron Highlanders Regiment in 1793. The regiment was originally called the '79th Regiment of Foot' or 'Cameronian Volunteers'. In 1794 the name was changed to the 79th Cameron Highlanders. Sir Alan was Colonel in Chief from 1793 to 1808.
