Loch Arkaig

Loch Arkaig is situated to the northwest of Fort William. On its shores are the remains of Government barracks built at the time of the Jacobite Rebellion. It is said that in 1746 a hoard of gold bullion was sent to Loch Arkaig to help the Jacobite supporters but it arrived too late. It is thought to have been buried in the hills around the loch.

The photograph is from 'Loyal Lochaber. Historical Genealogical and Traditionary' by W Drummond Norie, Glasgow, 1898.
