During the final Jacobite Uprising in 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie and his army managed to get as far as Derby, in the quest for the British throne. Unfortunately the hoped-for support from England and France was not forthcoming and the Jacobites were forced to retreat to Scotland. They encountered government troops at Falkirk on 17 January 1746 and defeated them.
