William, Ninth Earl of Glencairn

William Cunningham, 9th Earl of Glencairn, was born in 1610. He was appointed Privy Counsellor and Commissioner of the Treasury in Scotland in 1641 and Lord Justice General of Scotland in 1646. In 1653 he rejoined the Stewart supporters and raised an army in the Highlands in support of Charles II. The subsequent attempt to regain the throne for Charles II failed but upon the Restoration in 1660, Cunningham was appointed Lord Chancellor of Scotland for his loyalty.
