Sir Ewan Cameron of Lochiel

Sir Ewan Cameron of Lochiel (1629-1719) was admired and trusted by his men for his martial successes and for the way in which he conducted himself. He was given a knighthood in 1680, the same year in which he is said to have killed the last wolf in Lochaber. He was a loyal supporter of the Jacobite cause, fought at Killiecrankie in 1689 and sent his son to fight in the 1715 Rising. Sir Ewan's grandson was the "Gentle" Lochiel who fought with Prince Charles in the 1745 Jacobite Rising. This portrait is from 'A History of the Scottish Highlands, Highland Clans and Highland Regiments vol. 1' ed. by John S. Keltie
