Lieutenant Colonel William MacBean, VC

Lieutenant Colonel William MacBean (1818-1878) had enlisted in the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders as a private. He rose to command the 93rd in 1873 as Lieutenant Colonel. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at Lucknow, during the Indian Mutiny, when he killed eleven of the enemy single handed.
