This audio recording is part of a World War II project carried out by Ullapool Museum and Ullapool Primary School. 'Voices From Their Past - Messages For Your Future' was recorded in 2005. The interviewees - Mary and Donnie MacKenzie - are being interviewed by children of Ullapool Primary School.

Mary; When war started there was actually four naval ships out in the loch there, and it was the month of August, and a lot of the men's wives and children were up on holiday and I can remember us going down from school to the pier and watching all the women and children coming ashore because the boats had been recalled, you see? They had to go away, they were going to war. And some of us were in tears, I'm afraid, for these children because when were they going to see their dads again? Some of them never, I suppose. And there was one girl in particular who came to the school from Harris, the island of Harris, and she got in quite a state. She had just come back for another year in Ullapool school. She went home the next day and she never came back. It just got to her. She got quite nervous.
