John 'Ben Reay' Mackay, 10th of Melness, was born near Edinburgh and spent much of his life in Canada engaged in experimental farming. He contributed many articles to publications such as the 'Celtic Monthly' and was the author of 'An Old Scots Brigade', a history of Mackay's regiment, which was later incorporated with the Royal Scots. He died in 1896.
