1st Sutherland Rifle Volunteer Corps, Jubilee Review, Inverness, 1887

The 1st Sutherland Rifle Volunteers was one of the regiments present at the review of Highland volunteers held at Inverness in honour of the Queen's Jubilee on 27 June 1887. The following is a contemporary extract from the 'Inverness Courier',

'The Sutherlandshire volunteers were a magnificent body of men, all of good size and of splendid physique, and as they stepped along (790 strong) to the music of between 30 and 40 pipers, they elicited the hearty admiration of all. In point of physique the Sutherland battalion carried off the palm'.

The photograph is from 'Sutherland and the Reay Country' edited by Rev Adam Gunn & John Mackay, 1897
