Donald Munro was born in 1846 at Backies near Golspie in Sutherland. After being educated at a local school he set off to establish himself as a leading figure in the collieries of Staffordshire. After 18 years in the colliery business he started a successful business in Manchester as a civil and mining engineer. He was also a pioneer of an important mining enterprise in Northern Ireland.
