Tarbert Castle, Kintyre

This illustration was taken from "Argyll's Highlands" by Cuthbert Bede. It shows a photograph of Tarbert Castle in Kintyre. Overlooking the village of Tarbert, all that remains of the fortress today is the ruined tower, dating from around 1490.

A royal castle has probably existed here since the 13th century and during the 1320s the castle was strengthened by King Robert The Bruce to protect it against the Lords of the Isles. Later, the castle became a stronghold of the Clan Campbell
