Scottish Burgh Seals

This illustration shows four Scottish Burgh Seals. The seals were used to mark official documents.

Dornoch was created a Royal Burgh in 1628 by Charles I. Its seal shows three mullets and a fox with the motto 'Sans Peur' (without fear).

There are two Burgh Seals of Wick shown. Wick became a Royal Burgh in 1589 and, at the same time, gained the right to trade abroad.

Banff was created a Royal Burgh in 1372. It was an important trading town and was part of the Hanseatic League, an early free trading association.

These seals appear in 'Scottish Notes and Queries' vol.V, June 1891 to May 1892
