Johnson giving alms

During their tour of the Hebrides, Johnson and Boswell visited the island of Coll. There they met a family living in a very small hut. There was one bed for the whole family and the hut was very smoky. Johnson gave the family money. As they left the hut Boswell commented that philosophers supposed that a happy cottage should be clean and not smoky. Johnson replied that philosophers probably had not thought of either.

This illustration was taken from 'Boswell's Journal of the Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson' (1852 edition)
