The family spent some time in North America before returning to Scotland to Fort Augustus in 1773. Anne married the chaplain of the barracks in 1779 and they lived in Laggan where he was also the minister.

When her husband died in 1801, Anne turned to writing to make ends meet. Among her most famous works are 'Letters from the Mountains' and 'Memoirs of an American Lady'.

This portrait can be found in 'Glimpses of Church and Social Life in the Highlands in Olden Times', by Alexander MacPherson
