Plan of the Harbour Broch at Keiss, Caithness. Nineteenth-century excavations of the area revealed a broch or circular tower commonly found in Caithness and Orkney. The broch had been rebuilt on several occasions throughout its occupation. Layers of rubbish over 2 metres deep had built up over time on a series of paved floors inside the broch. The rubbish included 2nd century Roman pottery sherds.

The illustration is from the 'Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland', Vol VIII, 1871
