Necklace found at Torrish, Sutherland

This necklace of shale and jet was found in a cist at Torrish, Sutherland. In the Bronze Age jet was used for high status objects. It was not found in Scotland and had to be imported either as raw material or as the finished article. This jet may have come originally from the Whitby area in Yorkshire.

The necklace was found along with a flint arrowhead and both finds are in Dunrobin Museum. The illustration is from the 'Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland', Vol VIII, 1871
