Silver brooch found at Rogart, Sutherland

This silver brooch is one of the surviving pieces of a hoard of Pictish metalwork found at Rogart in Sutherland in the 19th century. The brooch was made in the 8th century and is penannular in form, which means it does not form a complete circle. Both the ends and the top of the ring feature a bird's head ornament, which can be seen clearer in the top left hand corner of the illustration. Both the ring and the pin are highly decorated with Celtic knot work.

This illustration is from 'Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, vol.10'
