Sink stones from Walls, Shetland

These are two examples of fishermen's sink stones from Shetland. The larger of the two is of sandstone while the smaller is a beach stone. Grooves have been cut into the stones to allow fishing cord to be tied securely to them. The larger of the two stones is 8 inches (20cm) long and weighs 43oz (1.2kg). The smaller stone is 5 inches (13cm) long and weighs 11oz (0.3kg).
