Oval implement of porphyry

An example of a flat oval implement or knife of porphyry. Porphyry is a fine-grained igneous rock which contains isolated crystals. The rock is usually red or purple but this example, we are told in the book, was of a greyish colour. The edge was sharp all the way round.

This illustration was taken from 'Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. Vol XII, Part I' (1876-77)
