Hand reel

This hand reel was found at Corpach in Kilmallie. Yarn was wound on to the hand reel a certain number of turns and was then wound off onto winnles or windle-blades which were two pieces of wood fastened together in the shape of a St Andrew's cross.

Rhymes were often chanted by the women winding the yarn to keep the number of turns correct.

This illustration was taken from 'Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. Vol XII, Part I' (1876-77)
