Long-handled comb

This bone long-handled comb was found at the Broch of Burrian on North Ronaldsay, Orkney. The comb was made from whale or dolphin bone around 200BC to 400AD. This type of comb was used in weaving to beat the weft threads together in an upright loom. The threads were beaten together to make the woven cloth regular.

This illustration was taken from 'Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. Vol XII, Part I' (1876-77)
