Highland targes

A targe is a circular battle shield. Although presentation models can be made out of metal, a working example was usually made of two layers of wood covered with tooled leather. There was an arm strap and hand grip at the back and a circular boss or sometimes a spike in the centre. These two examples are in the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

The illustration is from 'Archaeologia Scotica, or Transactions of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland', Vol V - Part I, Edinburgh, 1873
