Helmsdale from West

This postcard from the early 20th century shows Helmsdale from the west.

Helmsdale is situated on the east coast of Sutherland. Before the beginning of the 19th century there were only a few cottages and an inn here but a large village, planned by the Duchess of Sutherland, was built in 1818 to house tenants evicted to make way for sheep. The mouth of the River Helmsdale forms a natural harbour and the town thrived as a centre for herring fishing until World War I. Fishing has since declined and Helmsdale is now a centre for local shopping and tourism.
