Scourie War Memorial

This postcard shows the War Memorial at Scourie.

The crofting township of Scourie is situated on the far northwest coast of Sutherland at the head of a rocky bay and opposite the island of Handa, a well known bird reserve.

At one time the Mackays adopted Scourie as their centre and Lieutenant General Hugh Mackay was commander-in-chief in the reign of William and Mary.

The village is famous for the palm trees that grow in the gardens of Scourie House, a result of the mild climate due to the Gulf Stream.
