Fort William Railway Station

This postcard shows a coach and wagon waiting outside the railway station at Fort William. Situated by the lochside, the station was built as part of the West Highland Railway. The old fort was demolished to make way for the railway and goods yards were built on the site.

Before motorcars, the railway at Fort William was the main link to the south and uniformed porters employed by hotels in the town would await guests, to transport their luggage. The railway station was later demolished to make way for a dual carriageway and a new station was built on the edge of town
