Mallaig Harbour

This postcard shows steam drifters and fishing boats at Mallaig Harbour, overlooking the Sound of Sleat. Barrels of fish, probably salted herring, can be seen by the quayside.

Mallaig is the largest fishing port on the west coast of Scotland. Once a major herring fishing port, it now boasts Europe's largest catches of prawns.

The fishing village of Mallaig has a population of around 1000 and is located at the most westerly point of the peninsula of North Morar. It is now the largest community in West Lochaber
