Skibo Castle and Birthplace of Andrew Carnegie

This postcard shows Skibo Castle, a substantial mansion overlooking the Dornoch Firth. It was built between 1899 and 1903 for Andrew Carnegie (1835-1918) and was to become his Scottish retirement home. The castle incorporated another house, built some 20 years earlier. The Jacobean interior of Skibo Castle has recently been restored by its present owner, Peter de Savary. Today, the castle forms a highly exclusive hotel.

Andrew Carnegie was born in Dunfermline in 1835. He emigrated with his family to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1848. Beginning his career as a telegraph boy, he later became the superintendent of the Pennsylvania Railroad. He invested well in the railroad but he was also interested in steel manufacture. The Carnegie Steel Company later dominated the American steel market. Andrew Carnegie personally owned more than 50% of the company and when he sold it in 1901 he became the richest man in the world
