Summer Isles from the Dornie Road

This postcard shows the Summer Isles from the Dornie Road.

The Summer Isles are a group of a small islands situated at the entrance to Loch Broom on the western coast of Ross and Cromarty. Local crofters used the islands as summer grazing for their livestock hence the name.

Tanera Mor is the largest and the only inhabited island. It has a unique post office with its own private postal service and Summer Isles stamps. There is a café and a number of holiday cottages.

Tanera is from the Gaelic "tannara" meaning "harbour isle" and there is a safe anchorage on the eastern side of the island.

The names of the other larger islands are Tanera Beg, Eilean Dubh, Glas-leac Beag, Eilean Mullagrach, Priest Island, Horse Island, Isle Ristol, Bottle Island, Carn Iar and Carn Deas
